Lincoln PMA 2 Piston Pump 30-60 mm3

Aftermarket piston pump replacing the Lincoln PMA 2. 30 or 60 mm3 per outlet per stroke, 1-6 outlets, 50 bar, 24 V DC to 230 V AC, IP65, option N cycle sensor.

What the PMA 2 Is

The PMA 2 is a solenoid-operated progressive piston pump designed for oil lubrication in small to medium centralized systems. It delivers a fixed, repeatable volume per outlet per stroke, making it suitable for applications where consistent metering matters. The pump body supports one to six outlets, allowing a single unit to serve multiple lubrication points without air pockets in the delivery path.

This is an aftermarket pump, not manufactured, sponsored, or endorsed by SKF.

PMA 2 designations are for cross-reference identification only.

The PMA 2 uses an electric solenoid to drive a piston, pushing oil through individual outlets on each stroke. It is a multi-outlet oil pump intended for use with progressive dividers or direct lubrication points where per-outlet metering is required.

How the Solenoid Pump Works

The solenoid drives a piston through a short, controlled stroke each time it is energized. Each stroke displaces a fixed volume of oil from the piston chamber to the connected outlet. Because the piston and cylinder geometry determine the metered amount, the volume per outlet per stroke remains consistent across operating cycles.

Total pump output is not a single fixed number. It scales with the number of outlets and the stroke rate. A pump configured for 60 mm3 per outlet per stroke will move more oil as stroke frequency increases, but the per-outlet metering stays the same on every stroke.

Optional cycle monitoring is available through option N, an integrated proximity switch. This switch detects piston movement and can signal a control system when strokes are missed or interrupted. It provides a simple way to confirm that the pump is cycling as expected during operation.

Outlets, Volume, and Pressure

The phrase “per outlet per stroke” means each outlet receives the specified volume on every piston stroke. For example, a 4-outlet pump set to 60 mm3 per outlet per stroke running at 4 cycles per second moves 4 x 60 x 4 = 960 mm3/sec total across all outlets. Each individual outlet still receives only 60 mm3 per stroke.

Available pressure per line decreases as the number of outlets increases. The 50 bar maximum is a ceiling that depends on outlet count and system configuration. Fewer outlets generally allow higher pressure per line, while more outlets split the available output across more points.

When feeding downstream progressive dividers, use a maximum of 2 outlets. This keeps flow concentrated so the divider receives enough volume per stroke to operate reliably. Using more than 2 outlets for divider feed can starve the divider and cause inconsistent cycling.

Tubing Length and Nozzle Arrangement

Main line tubing length limits depend on the volume setting. The 60 mm3 version supports steel tubing up to 6 m or plastic tubing up to 3 m. The 30 mm3 version supports steel tubing up to 3 m or plastic tubing up to 1.5 m. These limits apply to the main line from pump outlet to lubrication point or divider.

Plastic tubing installations require inserts at compression fittings to prevent the tube from collapsing under pressure. Steel tubing does not need inserts but must be bent and routed carefully to avoid kinks. Keep lines as short as practical within the stated limits.

At the point of use, short nozzles or mist jets can be fitted to direct oil precisely where needed. Nozzle selection should match the lubrication point geometry and the oil viscosity in use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PMA 2 pump?

The PMA 2 is a solenoid-operated progressive piston pump for oil. It delivers fixed volume per outlet per stroke to multiple points.

Should I choose 30 or 60 mm3 per outlet per stroke?

Choose 60 mm3 for longer lines or higher flow needs. Choose 30 mm3 for shorter lines or smaller metered doses.

How does outlet count affect pressure?

More outlets split the pump output across more lines. Maximum pressure of 50 bar depends on outlet count.

What voltage options are available?

The PMA 2 is available in 24 V DC. It also comes in 120 V AC and 230 V AC.

Can the PMA 2 feed progressive dividers?

Yes, but use a maximum of 2 outlets. This keeps divider flow strong enough for reliable cycling.

What are the tubing length limits?

For 60 mm3, steel line is 6 m and plastic is 3 m. For 30 mm3, steel is 3 m and plastic is 1.5 m.

Should I use plastic or steel tubing?

Steel allows longer main line runs than plastic. Plastic requires inserts at compression fittings to prevent collapse.

What does option N do?

Option N adds an integrated proximity switch for cycle monitoring. It detects piston movement and signals missed or interrupted strokes.

What filtration is required for the oil?

Use a 30 micron filter on the inlet side. Cleaner oil protects the piston and outlet metering accuracy.
