What a 4-Jaw Coupler Is
A 4-jaw grease coupler is a push-on connector for hand and power grease pumps. Four spring-loaded jaws sit inside the barrel. Push it onto a nipple and the jaws snap back onto the hex flats behind the head, holding the connection as a mechanical lock.
It is the grease gun coupler style most shops reach for when a standard coupler will not stay clamped on the fitting. The same jaw action, sized for the grease guns already on the bench, is compared against locking-sleeve and double-handle styles in the grease gun coupler selection guide.
It differs from the double-handle pliers coupler, opened by squeezing, and the lock-collar coupler, which uses a sliding sleeve. All three attach to the same nipple family.
Technical Specifications

| Temperature range | -30 °C to +120 °C, seal dependent |
| Seal options | NBR (-40 °C to +100 °C); FKM (-20 °C to +200 °C) |
| Body length | 35-42 mm |
| Hex across flats | 13-17 mm |
| Nipple compatibility | DIN 71412 family; jaws clamp 7 mm, 8 mm, or 10 mm hex across flats |
How the Jaw Lock Works
Four jaws are held inward by a spring. Pushing the coupler onto the nipple forces the jaws outward over the rounded head, then the spring drives them back in behind it. To release, push slightly further and twist. Do not pull off at an angle, which bends jaw tips.
Identifying the Inlet Thread
NPT and BSP look nearly identical at 1/8 in, so confirm before ordering.
- Count threads over one inch: 27 is NPT, 28 is BSP or BSPT.
- Check taper: tapered means NPT or BSPT; parallel means BSP.
- Check sealing: tapered threads use tape; BSP parallel uses a bonded washer.
- Match the inlet: NPT female, BSP female, or BSPT female.
- If a fitting binds after a turn or two, stop.
The pneumatic grease gun specification guide covers outlet threads on air units, including the air greaser class.
Sizing the Coupler to the Pump
| Pump ratio | Typical output | Minimum coupler rating |
|---|---|---|
| 5:1 to 15:1 | 30-90 bar | 250 bar |
| 20:1 to 40:1 | 120-240 bar | 400 bar |
| 50:1 to 60:1 | 300-360 bar | 500 bar |
| 65:1 to 75:1 | 390-450 bar | 600 bar |
On the NLGI scale, 000 is the softest and 3 is the hardest. Worn nipples reduce grip; see the M10 grease nipples and DIN 71412 grease nipples ranges.
Seal Choice: NBR or FKM
| Seal | Temperature range | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| NBR | -40 °C to +100 °C | Mineral-based greases in general plant and mobile equipment duty |
| FKM | -20 °C to +200 °C | High-temperature points, synthetic greases, and aggressive additive packages |
The seal sets the real temperature limit. Choose NBR for mineral-based grease under 100 °C, FKM for synthetic or additive-heavy grease.
Installation Torque
| Inlet thread | Torque | Sealing method |
|---|---|---|
| 1/8 in NPT | 18-22 Nm | Thread sealant tape, two to three wraps |
| 1/8 in BSP parallel | 25-30 Nm | Bonded seal washer at the shoulder |
| 1/8 in BSPT | 20-25 Nm | Thread sealant tape, two to three wraps |
Tighten on the hex flats, not the barrel. Over-torque splits a tapered port; under-torque weeps past the washer.
Maintenance
Wipe the nipple before connecting. Flush the jaw cavity periodically. Check jaw tips and the seal for wear, and replace any seal with a cut or flat spot. Cap the inlet when the coupler is off the pump.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a 4-jaw grease coupler?
It is a push-on connector whose four spring-loaded jaws snap behind a nipple head. That mechanical lock lets you pump hands-free.
How do I choose between the 250 bar and 600 bar versions?
Estimate pump output from its ratio, then allow margin above it. A 5:1 to 15:1 pump suits 250 bar; a 65:1 to 75:1 pump needs 600 bar.
How do I tell whether my inlet is 27 TPI or 28 TPI?
Count threads over one inch: 27 is NPT, 28 is BSP or BSPT. Then check taper to separate BSPT from parallel BSP.
Which grease nipples will this coupler grip?
It fits the DIN 71412 family, clamping 7 mm, 8 mm, or 10 mm hex across flats. Worn or rounded heads reduce grip. That is the same head every DIN-pattern grease gun coupler in this catalog grips
How is a 4-jaw coupler different from a simple push-on coupler?
A simple push-on relies on friction and can slip off under pressure. The 4-jaw design forms a mechanical lock behind the head.
Should I choose NBR or FKM seals?
Choose NBR for mineral-based grease up to 100 °C. Choose FKM for synthetic or additive-heavy grease up to 200 °C.
What happens if I force an NPT coupler onto a BSPT fitting?
The 27 TPI and 28 TPI threads cross-thread, damaging both parts and leaving a weeping joint. They are never interchangeable.
How do I confirm the coupler is locked before pumping?
Push it fully onto the nipple, then pull back lightly. It should not move. Twist to release.
How often should I service the coupler?
Wipe nipples before every connection and flush the jaw cavity periodically. Inspect jaw tips and seals, replacing any seal with a cut or flat spot.
How do I get advice on choosing this coupler?
IsoHiTech Lubrication Systems was founded in 2023, engineering since 2006. Send your pump ratio, inlet thread, and grease type to inquiry@isohitech.com, or use the contact form and we will match the coupler to your duty. The same contact page handles custom jaw and seal requests. Pair it with a hand or pneumatic grease gun and the jaws do the holding — no second hand on the coupler.
