90 Degree Grease Nipple | M6-M10, BSP, NPT | IsoHiTech

90 degree grease nipple: M6, M8, 1/8 BSP, 1/4 BSP, 1/8 NPT threads; DIN 71412 head; brass, stainless, or coated steel; declared 5,000-10,000 PSI.

Overview

The 90 degree grease nipple is a right-angle lubrication fitting: the threaded shank screws into the machine port, and the head turns 90° so the coupler clips on from the side instead of head-on. It suits points behind guards, flanges, or housings where a straight fitting leaves no room for the gun.

Five threads are available – M6 x 1.0, M8 x 1.25, 1/8 BSP, 1/4 BSP, and 1/8 NPT – in brass C3604BD, stainless steel SUS303/304, or coated carbon steel. The head form follows DIN 71412 (related dimensional standard: SAE J534), so a standard coupler fits. A spring-loaded ball check valve closes at 2-5 PSI (0.14-0.34 bar) when the gun is removed. Declared working pressure: 5,000-10,000 PSI (345-689 bar), depending on thread and material.

Measure the Thread Before You Choose the Angle

Thread identity comes first; a 90° body cannot compensate for a wrong thread. M6 and M8 are metric; BSP and NPT are pipe threads that look alike but differ in form and pitch – a 1/8 NPT nipple threads into a 1/8 BSP port for a few turns and never seals. Measure the major diameter and count threads against the table above, or use a thread gauge.

For other metric sizes see the M6 grease nipple and M10 grease nipples pages. If none of the five threads matches your port, ask us for a quote with your measurements.

Coupler Access and Protrusion

A 90° body lets the coupler approach parallel to the machine surface. Two checks follow. First, coupler jaws are wider than the nipple head, so measure clearance against the coupler body, not the head. Second, overall length runs 24-35 mm by thread, so the head stands clear of the surface; guard it where linkages or debris can strike.

Still weighing a 45° body against a 90° body? That selection question is covered on our angled grease nipples page.

Installation

  1. Clean the port threads and remove burrs or old sealant.
  2. Start the nipple by hand for 2-3 full turns to confirm engagement – this is the cross-thread check.
  3. As you enter the final torque window, aim the outlet toward the gun’s approach direction. Do not back a tightened fitting off to re-aim it.
  4. Tighten to the torque for your thread from the table above.
  5. Pump the gun once to confirm the check valve opens and grease reaches the point.

Applications

  • Industrial machinery: bearings and conveyor points crowded by frames or covers.
  • Automotive and fleet: chassis and steering points facing an obstruction.
  • Agricultural equipment: implement pivots and harvester bearings behind structure.
  • Hydraulic equipment: cylinder pivots and linkage points beside hoses and valves.
  • Marine and outdoor: brass or stainless versions where corrosion exposure is high.

Maintenance

Inspect regularly – frequency depends on environment and grease cleanliness, not a fixed calendar. Replace the nipple if the outlet stays blocked, the threads are stripped, the hex rounds off, or grease seeps past the check valve.

FAQ

What is a 90 degree grease nipple?

A threaded lubrication fitting whose head turns 90° from the shank, letting a grease gun couple on from the side where a straight fitting leaves no room.

Will a standard grease gun coupler fit a 90 degree nipple?

Yes. The head follows DIN 71412, the geometry couplers are built for. The real constraint is clearance for the coupler body around the head, not the nipple itself.

Does a 90 degree nipple stick out far enough to get knocked off?

Overall lengths run 24-35 mm by thread. In impact-prone positions, use a guarded or recessed mount.

How do I confirm which of the five threads I need?

Measure the port’s major diameter and count threads over a known length, then match the table above. BSP and NPT need a thread gauge – they look identical but never interchange.

Should I choose a 45° or a 90° nipple?

90° when the gun must approach parallel to the surface; 45° when a gentler bend leaves more clearance. Full selection logic: angled grease nipples.

What if the head does not point the right way after tightening?

Aim the outlet as you enter the torque window and stop within range at the needed orientation. Do not loosen a tightened fitting to re-aim, especially on tapered NPT – re-seal and re-tighten.

Which material should I choose?

Coated carbon steel for general use up to +180°C; brass C3604BD for corrosion resistance; stainless SUS303/304 for the widest temperature window (-40°C to +204°C) and wet environments.

What pressure can a 90 degree grease nipple handle?

Declared working pressure is 5,000-10,000 PSI (345-689 bar) depending on thread and material; the real system limit is set by your grease gun and hose.

What does the 2-5 PSI valve closing pressure mean?

The pressure at which the ball check reseats when pumping stops, holding grease in and dirt out. The valve opens under normal gun pressure.
