How They Work: Pressure Ratio Explained
A high-pressure grease pump is an air-driven intensifier. A large air piston drives a small grease piston, and the area ratio between them multiplies pressure: the grease outlet pressure equals the ratio times the inlet air pressure. At 100 PSI shop air, a 50:1 pump gives 5,000 PSI, a 60:1 gives 6,000 PSI, and a 75:1 gives 7,500 PSI. The ratio table in the pressure ratio selection guide walks the same math across the full range.
Air supply for these units runs 5.5-10.5 bar (80-150 PSI). A bigger ratio does not create pressure from nothing; it multiplies whatever the compressor delivers, so a weak supply caps every ratio alike.
Core Specifications
One envelope covers the class; the drive type and ratio pick where a unit lands inside it.
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Output pressure | 3,000-15,000 PSI (207-1,034 bar) |
| Pressure ratios | 30:1, 50:1, 60:1, 75:1 |
| Air inlet pressure | 5.5-10.5 bar (80-150 PSI) |
| Air consumption | 150-400 NL/min at full flow |
| Grease flow rate | up to 1.4 kg/min (3.1 lb/min) |
| Grease compatibility | NLGI 0-3; NLGI 3 needs adequate follower plate load |
| Container compatibility | 5 gal pail, 20 kg keg, 120 lb (55-gal) drum |
| Outlet port | typically 1/4″ NPT or BSP female |
| Operating temperature | -20°C to +80°C |
| Wetted materials | carbon steel, stainless steel, chrome-plated |
Stainless or chrome-plated wetted parts suit corrosive and marine environments where carbon steel would pit.
Three Pump Classes and Where Each Fits
Air-operated pneumatic pumps in 50:1-75:1 serve fleet workshops, production lines, and drum-mounted stations. They deliver continuous flow, up to 7,500 PSI at standard shop air, from 5-gallon pails to 55-gallon drums. Manual lever-action pumps reach up to 3,500 PSI for remote field service with no air supply, running off 12.5-20 kg kegs. Ultra-high-pressure pumps in the 10,000-15,000 PSI band serve mining, offshore, spring-loaded valve fittings, and extreme-viscosity lubricants; their wetted parts are stainless or chrome-plated, and they demand reinforced hose assemblies rated to the full outlet pressure.
Container mounts are separate pages: the 5 gallon pneumatic grease pump, the 25 kg pneumatic grease pump, and the 120 lb pneumatic grease pump each cover their own mounting hardware.
Fitting Pressure Reference
Match the pump class to the column the fittings actually live in. Feeding more pressure than the fitting needs adds nothing to the lubrication result.
| Fitting condition | Typical pressure needed |
|---|---|
| Standard grease zerk, new and clean | 1,500-3,000 PSI |
| Worn or partially blocked fitting | 3,000-5,000 PSI |
| High-resistance or spring-loaded fittings | 5,000-7,500 PSI |
| Mining, valve, or ultra-duty points | 10,000-15,000 PSI |
A fitting that needs 3,000 PSI does not grease faster at 7,500 PSI; it just stresses the line and the seal path.
Priming, NLGI 3, and Cold Weather
Loss of prime usually traces to the inlet, not the pump body. Air ingestion at the follower plate is the usual cause: a damaged wiper seal, or a plate diameter wrong for the container so it breaks contact with the grease surface. A worn foot valve letting grease back-drain between strokes is the second cause. The follower plate OD must match the container ID within 1 mm for the plate to ride the grease down cleanly and keep air out.
NLGI 3 is the stiffest grade in the range, and below 5°C it may not flow at all. A heated drum cover or pre-warming restores flow before the shift starts. Confirm NLGI 3 priming at order so the follower plate load suits the grade.
Hose, Coupler, and System Limits
The working pressure of the whole grease line equals its lowest rated component. Hose, coupler, and reel must each be rated at or above the pump maximum outlet: a 75:1 pump at 100 PSI inlet makes 7,500 PSI, and every component downstream must carry that figure. The grease pump hose page rates the dispensing lines for this duty, and what a central lubrication system is explains where these pumps sit inside fixed plants. For a ratio and class matched to your fittings, send the system details through the contact page. The broader pump family sits on the grease pump page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a high-pressure grease pump?
It is a pump that delivers grease from 3,000 PSI for clean fittings up to 15,000 PSI for seized points. Three designs cover the range: pneumatic, manual lever, and ultra-high-pressure.
What does the pressure ratio mean?
The ratio multiplies inlet air pressure into grease outlet pressure. At 100 PSI air, 50:1 gives 5,000 PSI, 60:1 gives 6,000 PSI, and 75:1 gives 7,500 PSI.
How much compressor capacity is needed?
These pumps draw 150-400 NL/min at full flow. Size the compressor to sustain that flow at the duty cycle your station actually runs.
What causes a loss of prime?
Most often air ingestion at the follower plate: a damaged wiper seal or wrong diameter breaking contact with the grease. A worn foot valve letting grease back-drain between strokes is the other cause.
Can NLGI 3 run through a standard pump?
Only with adequate follower plate load and a cold-start check. Below 5°C NLGI 3 may not flow; use a heated drum cover or pre-warming, and confirm priming at order.
What hose rating is needed?
Rate hose, coupler, and reel at or above the pump maximum outlet pressure. The working pressure of the whole line equals its lowest rated component.
Pneumatic, manual lever, or ultra-high pressure?
Pneumatic units serve workshops and production lines with shop air. Manual lever covers remote field service, and ultra-high-pressure units serve mining, offshore, and spring-loaded fittings.
Which container sizes are supported?
Mounts exist for 5 gal pails, 20 kg kegs, and 120 lb (55-gal) drums. Each container size has its own dedicated mount page.
Is a higher ratio always better?
No, choose the lowest class that completes the task, because more available pressure is not a better lubrication result. Ask our team to match the class.
