Y-Type Strainer for High-Pressure Lubrication Lines

Y-type strainer for high-pressure lubrication lines: 40 MPa, 1/4 to 1 inch NPT, four stainless screen ratings from 10 to 500 micron for grease and oil.

What a Y-Type Strainer Does

A Y-type strainer is a cleanable mesh strainer fitted into a high-pressure lubrication line for coarse protection. The angled body holds a stainless steel screen in the flow path, so debris is caught before it reaches pumps, meters and valves. This page covers cleanable screen strainers; for fine media filtration see the GGQ pipeline filter page. The screen is removable, so the same body stays in the line while the mesh is cleaned or swapped. Bodies are rated to 40 MPa (5,800 psi) and take NPT ports from 1/4 to 1 inch. Use it on grease and oil lines where coarse debris must be stopped early. Fine separation is a different job, handled by disposable-media filters. A blow-down plug lets the bowl be flushed while the unit stays piped.

Strainer or Filter?

Market convention separates the two by function and by media. A strainer is a coarse cleanable screen that protects pumps, meters and valves from debris. A filter uses disposable media with a micron rating and performs fine separation. The two are often used together in one line: a strainer upstream, a filter downstream. If the goal is protecting a pump inlet or a grease distribution manifold from shop debris, the strainer is the correct choice. If the goal is removing fine particles that pass a coarse screen, move to the fine-filtration side. For fine-media options, see the lubrication filter cartridge set listing. Strainers are cleaned and reinstalled; filter elements are replaced.

Choosing a Screen Rating

Four stainless mesh ratings cover most lubrication work. Match the rating to what sits downstream, not to the fluid alone.

10 micronfine protection for precision oil metering components
25 microngeneral oil circuits and the finest recommended for grease
150 microngrease distribution lines and pump protection
500 microncoarse straining and debris capture

Apply the coarsest-that-protects rule: choose the coarsest screen that still protects the downstream components. Finer is not automatically better. In grease service, select 25 micron or coarser, because finer screens plug quickly with soap-thickened lubricants. For oil circuits feeding metering valves or small orifice components, 10 micron is the usual starting point. Coarse 500 micron screens suit lines where the only concern is debris capture before a pump. The screen is removable, cleanable with solvent and a soft brush, and reinstallable, so one body serves the installation across many cleanings. Keep a spare screen on the shelf so a cleaning does not stop the line for long.

Installation and Cleaning

Mount the strainer so the Y-leg points downward in horizontal runs. Debris collects in the low pocket and stays away from the screen face. The blow-down plug lets the pocket be flushed without breaking the pipework. To blow down: shut off pressure, open the plug, flush the pocket, then close the plug and restore pressure. Inspect monthly on new installations. After the line settles, clean every 500-1,000 operating hours as a typical starting point. Shorten that interval when the differential across the screen climbs, when grease grades change, or when a pump or metering valve shows wear. Size the port to the line: a small port on a large line, or the reverse, adds restriction and disturbs flow. Check for weeping at the plug and port threads after each service. Keep the gasket and screen seating surfaces clean during any service work.

What Is Supplied

Supply is one strainer body with the selected screen installed. Confirm port size, screen rating, and body material when ordering: carbon steel or stainless 304, NPT from 1/4 to 1 inch, screen at 10, 25, 150 or 500 micron, and standard 200°C or high-temp 300°C build. Related line items are listed on the lubrication filters category page. Accessories such as a tee coupling or an in-line check valve can be ordered at the same time when the line is being assembled; list them together on the quote page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the screen cleanable or disposable?

The screen is cleanable stainless steel 304 mesh. Wash it with solvent and a soft brush, then reinstall it.

Which screen for grease lines?

Select 25 micron or coarser. Finer screens plug quickly with soap-thickened grease.

How do I pick between the four ratings?

Choose the coarsest screen that still protects the downstream components. Start there and adjust after inspection.

What is the body made of?

Carbon steel is standard, with a stainless 304 option. Confirm the choice when ordering.

What is the pressure rating?

The body is rated to 40 MPa, equal to 5,800 psi.

What ports are available?

NPT ports from 1/4 to 1 inch. Match the port to the line size.

What is the temperature limit?

200°C for the standard build and 300°C for the high-temp version.

Can it be cleaned without disassembly?

Yes, the blow-down plug allows an inline flush. Shut off pressure first, then open the plug.

Strainer or filter, which do I need?

Use a strainer for coarse debris protection. For fine media separation, see the GGQ pipeline filter page.
